Overview

At Adinga Tours and Travel SMC Ltd., we are more than delighted to take you on a safari down to the jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Geographically positioned in the southwestern part of Uganda, this unique region stands as living proof of nature’s mastery, an enthralling realm where the boundaries between the human world and the wild one blur into obscurity. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, covering an area of approximately 331 square kilometres, is a sanctuary of biodiversity, a realm of lush greenery, and a sanctuary for one of Earth’s most precious treasures, the endangered mountain gorilla.

In the southwest of Uganda, is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park which also straddles the Great Rift Valley. The name Bwindi, which means “impenetrable” in the native Rukiga language, perfectly captures the region’s thick cover of flora. These forests, which have survived for more than 25,000 years and are a living legacy of the prehistoric age, are evidence of the strength and tenacity of nature. The park is a part of the larger Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanoes that stretches into adjacent Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, giving the scenery an otherworldly feel.

Entering Bwindi is like stepping into a lost universe where the sounds of the forest create an orchestra of life and the air is dense with moisture. The sky is obscured by towering trees, some of which are hundreds of years old, producing a mysterious atmosphere that astounds visitors.

This impenetrable forest, which spans an altitude range of 1,190 metres to 2,607 metres, is a hub for biodiversity and a topographical wonder.

Without doubt, Bwindi’s endangered mountain gorilla population is its crown treasure. It is home to more than 459 individuals, as the country is home to 54% of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. As tourists journey into the heart of the jungle to see these mugged creatures in their natural habitat, tracking these fascinating creatures is a life-changing experience.

Over 350 different bird species have been recorded at Bwindi, including the elusive and rare African Green Broadbill and the magnificent Great Blue Turaco. As they negotiate the thick canopy and vegetation in search of these feathery riches, bird aficionados will feel as though they have arrived in paradise.

The park is also a botanical paradise, home to more than 1,000 different plant species, many of which are unique to the vicinity. The area is dominated by tall trees, orchids, and ferns, creating a spectacular backdrop for any explorations.

A dazzling variety of wildlife and plants are found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, which is a hotspot for biodiversity.

The mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is one of Bwindi’s most beloved and sought-after inhabitants. More than half of the remaining population of these mutant creatures are found in this park.  Trekkers from around the world venture here for a chance to encounter these gentle giants in their natural habitat, a truly humbling and life-changing experience. Guided by our team from Adinga Tours and Travel SMC Ltd and experienced rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, you’ll embark on a journey through the dense forest, seeking out one of the habituated gorilla families. Once found, you’ll have the privilege of spending a precious hour in their presence, observing their behaviour and interactions, and simply marvelling at their existence. Gorillas are mugged giants and have 98.9% of human DNA and are intelligent, cunning, alluring, and interesting. Most male gorillas weigh 500 kilos or more. Beyond gorillas, Bwindi is a haven for other primates, including chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 350 bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, making it a coveted destination for ornithologists.

Mountain gorilla populations in Bwindi include the Mubare gorilla group being the first to be accessible for tourism in April 1993. Nine gorilla groups are being habituated in the park, and one gorilla group is open for research. There are an estimated 19 gorilla groups present. More than 129 different species of mammals live in this biologically varied area, ten of which are primate species like baboons and chimpanzees, and more than 45 of which are small mammals. Elephants and antelopes are distinct species that exist in this ecosystem. There are also an estimated 350 bird species in the forest, including 23 endemics to the Albertine Rift, 220 butterfly species, including 8 endemics to the region, and 27 species of frogs, chameleons, and geckos.

Gorilla Trekking Guidelines

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is a unique and memorable experience, but it also comes with specific guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of both the gorillas and the visitors. These guidelines are designed to minimize the impact of human activity on the gorilla habitat and reduce the risk of disease transmission between humans and gorillas. Here are the general guidelines for gorilla trekking in Bwindi:

  • Obtain a Permit. You must obtain a gorilla trekking permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in advance. It’s advisable to book your permit well in advance, as there is limited availability, and the demand can be high.

  • Age and Health Requirements. Visitors must be at least 15 years old to participate in gorilla trekking. You should be in reasonably good health, as the trek can be physically demanding due to steep terrain and dense vegetation.

  • Trekking Groups. Gorilla trekking groups are limited to a maximum of 8 visitors per gorilla family per day and the tracking lasts for 60 minutes. This helps minimize stress on the gorillas and reduces the risk of disease transmission.

  • Keep a Safe Distance. You should maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters (about 23 feet) from the gorillas at all times. This is to protect both you and the gorillas from potential disease transmission.

  • Stay in a Group. You must stay with your group and follow your guide’s instructions throughout the trek. This helps minimize your impact on the gorillas and their habitat.
  • No Flash Photography. The use of flash photography is strictly prohibited during gorilla trekking, as it can disturb the gorillas. You can use non-flash cameras and video recording devices, but silence them before approaching the gorillas.

  • Do Not Litter. You must not leave any trash or litter behind in the park. All waste, including tissue paper, should be carried out with you.

  • No Eating or Drinking. Eating and drinking are not allowed in the presence of gorillas to prevent any food or drink items from being dropped and potentially consumed by the gorillas.

  • Follow Trekking Duration. Gorilla treks typically last between 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. You must adhere to the designated trekking duration.
  • Do Not Touch the Gorillas. It’s strictly forbidden to touch the gorillas, as this can transmit diseases between humans and gorillas. Maintain a respectful distance.

  • Cover Your Mouth and Nose. If you need to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with your elbow to prevent the spread of any potential diseases.

  • Stay Calm and Quiet. While observing the gorillas, speak in hushed tones and avoid sudden movements or loud noises that might startle them.

By following these guidelines, you can have a safe and enjoyable gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park while also contributing to the conservation of these magnificent animals and their habitat.
