The name Bwindi, which means “impenetrable” in the native Rukiga language, perfectly captures the region’s thick cover of flora. These forests, which have survived for more than 25,000 years and are a living legacy of the prehistoric age, are evidence of the strength and tenacity of nature. The park is a part of the larger Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanoes that stretches into adjacent Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, giving the scenery an otherworldly feel.

Without doubt, Bwindi’s endangered mountain gorilla population is its crown treasure. It is home to more than 459 individuals, as the country is home to 54% of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. Over 350 different bird species have been recorded at Bwindi, including the elusive and rare African Green Broadbill and the magnificent Great Blue Turaco. Gorillas are mugged giants and have 98.9% of human DNA and are intelligent, cunning, alluring, and interesting. Most male gorillas weigh 500 kilos or more. Beyond gorillas, Bwindi is a haven for other primates, including chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 350 bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, making it a coveted destination for ornithologists.

Mountain gorilla populations in Bwindi include the Mubare gorilla group being the first to be accessible for tourism in April 1993. Nine gorilla groups are being habituated in the park, and one gorilla group is open for research. There are an estimated 19 gorilla groups present. More than 129 different species of mammals live in this biologically varied area, ten of which are primate species like baboons and chimpanzees, and more than 45 of which are small mammals. Elephants and antelopes are distinct species that exist in this ecosystem. There are also an estimated 350 bird species in the forest, including 23 endemics to the Albertine Rift, 220 butterfly species, including 8 endemics to the region, and 27 species of frogs, chameleons, and geckos.

The most common gorilla families in Bwindi include Kutu with 20 members, Bikingi with 12 members, Bitukura with 13, Bushaho with 10, Busingye with 10, Bweza with 15, Habinyanja with 12, Kahungye with 25, Katwe with 11, Kyaguliro with 4, Mishaya with 9, Mubare with 9, Mukiza with 15, Nkuringo with 12, Oruzogo with 10, Rushegura with 9, and Shongi with 11 members.

The nearest airport to Bwindi is Kihihi Airstrip, but many visitors fly into Entebbe International Airport and drive or take a domestic flight to the park. Road access is also available from nearby towns.

The distance from Kampala city to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is approximately 540 kilometres to 600 kilometers (310 to 370 miles) depending on the exact location within the park by road and usually covers an average of 9 to 12 hours by road through the towns of Kabale and Kisoro. For domestic flights, several local domestic operators operate flights from Entebbe International Airport and Kajjansi Airfield to Kihihi Airstrip, as the scenic flight usually takes 1 to 1 and a half hours by air and then a transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park by road from the airstrip.

The approximate driving distance from Entebbe International Airport to the Bwindi region is roughly 500 to 600 kilometers (310 to 370 miles) depending on the exact location within the park. Gorilla Permits

Gorilla trekking permits, which are essential for the experience, should be secured in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Its advisable to have the permits booked 30 days prior to the trip.

Gorilla Trekking Guidelines

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is a unique and memorable experience, but it also comes with specific guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of both the gorillas and the visitors. These guidelines are designed to minimize the impact of human activity on the gorilla habitat and reduce the risk of disease transmission between humans and gorillas. Here are the general guidelines for gorilla trekking in Bwindi:

• Obtain a Permit. You must obtain a gorilla trekking permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in advance. It’s advisable to book your permit well in advance, as there is limited availability, and the demand can be high.

• Age and Health Requirements. Visitors must be at least 15 years old to participate in gorilla trekking. You should be in reasonably good health, as the trek can be physically demanding due to steep terrain and dense vegetation.

• Trekking Groups. Gorilla trekking groups are limited to a maximum of 8 visitors per gorilla family per day and the tracking lasts for 60 minutes. This helps minimize stress on the gorillas and reduces the risk of disease transmission.

• Keep a Safe Distance. You should maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters (about 23 feet) from the gorillas at all times. This is to protect both you and the gorillas from potential disease transmission.

• Stay in a Group. You must stay with your group and follow your guide’s instructions throughout the trek. This helps minimize your impact on the gorillas and their habitat.
• No Flash Photography. The use of flash photography is strictly prohibited during gorilla trekking, as it can disturb the gorillas. You can use non-flash cameras and video recording devices, but silence them before approaching the gorillas.

• Do Not Litter. You must not leave any trash or litter behind in the park. All waste, including tissue paper, should be carried out with you.

• No Eating or Drinking. Eating and drinking are not allowed in the presence of gorillas to prevent any food or drink items from being dropped and potentially consumed by the gorillas.

• Follow Trekking Duration. Gorilla treks typically last between 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. You must adhere to the designated trekking duration.
• Do Not Touch the Gorillas. It’s strictly forbidden to touch the gorillas, as this can transmit diseases between humans and gorillas. Maintain a respectful distance.

• Cover Your Mouth and Nose. If you need to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with your elbow to prevent the spread of any potential diseases.

• Stay Calm and Quiet. While observing the gorillas, speak in hushed tones and avoid sudden movements or loud noises that might startle them.
